About
A water-heavy, high-class championship course with 5-star service
Built around the series of large lakes that give it its name, the Waterside Course at Siam Country Club is spread out over 200 acres of gently sloping terrain that recently played host to the 2022 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship. With so much water in play, little protection from prevailing winds and the course playing a hefty 7,400 yards from the back tees, it's no walk in the park, but there's much to love.
The course is kept in immaculate condition, the fairways carpeted with Paspalum and the lightning quick greens clad in ultra-dwarf Bermuda. There are some memorable holes, not least the closing holes of each nine. The pretty par-3 7th plays over water to a kidney-shaped green protected by a bunker directly in front and two more sand traps behind, while the 8th and 9th both require a deft fade that flirts with a watery grave on approach.
The 17th is a great par-4 that dog-legs left to a semi island green, the narrow landing zone off the tee protected by a large bunker, while the last is long par-5 that wraps around a lake and demands bravery off the tee if you want a chance of birdie. A pair of awkwardly-placed bunkers lie in wait on approach, ready to ruin the scorecard of anything short or right, while the water will swallow anything left.
The clubhouse features a modern contemporary design and has all the facilities and 5-star service you would expect of a course of this calibre. There's a large pro shop, top notch locker rooms and an excellent restaurant serving Thai and international fare, while the terrace offers a great panoramic view of the surrounding valley. There's an 18-hole putting “course” next to the clubhouse if you feel the need for another challenge.
Despite living somewhat in the shadows of its illustrious sister courses, the Waterside Course at Siam Country Club is a top class course in its own right and should definitely be on your list of places to play on your next Pattaya golf holiday.
