About
Ranked as one of the best in Thailand, this Jack Nicklaus design is a must-play
Set amidst 700 acres of picturesque terrain made up of mountains, lakes and valleys, the 27 holes of Laem Chabang International Country Club make up what is widely considered to be the best layout in Pattaya. Each type of terrain corresponds to a 9-hole loop, each with its own challenges and distinct beauty.
The course makes the most of the gorgeous natural environment, incorporating coconut trees, lakes, streams, creeks and exposed rock formations to present a challenge that is enhanced by numerous well-placed sand traps. The course is in pristine condition with lush fairways, fast and true putting greens, an immaculate clubhouse and top-class caddies.
After a gentle dog-leg par-4 that plays to a green guarded by a trio of bunkers, the Mountain nine (Course A) offers up its first real masterpiece. A mid-length par-3 that plays over water to a green guarded front and back by sand, it's an intoxicating start to a memorable round.
Water is back in play on the long par-4 5th, where you must drive over water to a narrow fairway edged on the left side by one long continuous bunker that runs most of the way to along the hole, occasionally pinching the fairway. With water even further left, it's a bad place to suddenly start hooking.
Following a nervy approach over water from the narrowing fairway of the 6th, sand traps are the main threat, especially on the par-4 9th, where a series of deep bunkers sit right on line just short of the green.
The Lake nine (Course B) lives up to its name with water in play on seven of the nine holes, notably during a great stretch from 6 to 8, each of which involve a forced water carry. A deft fade is required to thread your way to the green at the 6th, while it's a case of green-or-bust at the short 7th, where you're not only contending with the lake but also the bunkers front and back of the putting surface.
The final hole of the Lake nine is a long par-5 with a generous fairway that sits at an angle to the direct line. After your drive, the direct route to the green will be blocked by a large tree, so you must play to the left to open up for your approach, making sure to avoid the substantial bunker designed to catch anything too far left.
The Valley nine (Course C) is probably our favourite, although it's also the most reluctant to give up birdies. The 2nd is a memorable monster of a par 5 with water everywhere and demands accuracy all the way to a green protected by a bunker along the right hand side. The 3rd plays to what is effectively an island fairway and demands a tough carry over water to another well-protected green with a bunker in front.
The challenges keep coming, with the 4th rated as the most difficult of any of the 27 holes at Laem Chabang Country Club. You must avoid the large, awkward bunker in the middle of the fairway to set yourself up for a demanding approach over water to a narrow, sloping green. Par is a great score here.
The green at the long par-3 5th, one of the prettiest holes in Pattaya, is surrounded on all sides by a raft of bunkers, and sand is your main enemy over the three holes that follow, especially on the 6th where no less than 12 bunkers await any lack of accuracy.
After all that, the last is a long albeit straightforward par-4, a tee shot over water and just 2 sand traps the only thing standing between you and a good score to wrap up what will no doubt be a memorably round of golf on this top class course.
Away from the course, there are extensive practice facilities, and the excellent clubhouse houses top class locker rooms, a well-stocked pro shop, and a large restaurant serving local and international fare. Having been nominated for Best Course in Thailand every single year of the World Golf Awards, the only mystery is why it hasn't won yet. A trip to Laem Chabang International Country Club will live long in the memory.
