Eastern Star Country Club & Resort
About
A forgiving, well maintained links-style course on the site of a former coconut plantation
One of just five courses in Thailand designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones Jr, Eastern Star Country Club & Resort features some generous fairways that offer some leeway off the tee, but enough bunkering—and no less than 11 lakes—to keep you on your toes.
The course is very picturesque, framed as it is by the nearby mountain range, and makes for a perfect venue for a relaxing game on any golf holiday in Pattaya, not least because its proximity to the gulf of Thailand means the course is usually blessed with a welcome cooling breeze.
You'll need to play intelligent golf to score well here, as there are numerous doglegs where positioning is vital and you also need to make sure you are not blocked out by the tall trees. Water hazards usually line one side of the fairway with and are often a factor as you approach the green so if a hook or a slice creeps into your game then you are going to get wet.
The signature hole is the attractive par-3 13th, which requires a tee shot over water into a green with another water hazard on one side, a very deep bunker on the other and thick rough everywhere else. The par 5 4th hole is another hole worthy of mention, thanks to its a narrow landing area with water all along the left had side.
There's also some very unusual and imaginative topiary, including a hedge right in the middle of the fairway sculpted in the shape of the FA Cup on the second hole, right in the middle of the fairway. We're not quite sure why, but it's certainly memorable.
The changing rooms are a little disappointing, and the food at the restaurant is only just the right side of average restaurant, but overall this course offers excellent value for money in pleasant surroundings.
Reviews
Bad time of year to play there
Greens had sand from aeration. Very difficult to putt. Caddies not very helpful, some are useless, no knowledge of the course or greens. I went with the conditions. Others in my group were very dissatisfied.Too long, poor marshalling. 6hrs for 18 holes is not enjoyable
Course is in good condition greens are very firm; bunkers need to be raked more regularly. Both caddies provided very inexperienced—one had worked two months, the other one worked five monthsGood course at low price
Played as a two ball on Wednesday morning, we finished 18 holes within 4 hours. The course was in good condition and greens ran about 9 on the stim. Friendly course layout except one of the short par 5 that didn’t really make much sense. hole 13 is a par 3 with two greens for players to choose hitting into, as one does not require golfers to hit over a water hazard. Would recommend to play Monday to Thursday, as caddie mentioned that Friday to Sunday gets busy with many five or even six somes. Course is popular with both locals and foreigners. Overall, good experience at such a low price.Course Info
